Bibliography (English Language Books
Currently in Print):
Here are some books I have read:
Carl Nielsen, Jack Lawson, Phaidon
Press, London, 1997.
I enjoyed this biography, one of the very
few available in English. It is 80% about his life and 20% about
his music. Not too musicologically in depth, so there is no reaon
for the casual listener to fear reading this book. I found it to
be quick reading, and it provided much insight into Nielsen the man.
Also, there are lots of good photos.
Carl Nielsen, Symphony No. 5 (Cambridge
Music Handbooks), David Fanning, Cambridge University Press,
Cambridge, 1997
An in depth discussion of the Symphony
no. 5, with a discussion on how the symphony relates to the concept of
progressive tonality. It would be nice if they included a copy of
the complete score with the book, but they do not. I have not found
an inexpensive copy of the study score of this symphony, probably because
it is not in the public domain. I still enjoyed the book, because
he includes enough examples from the score to illuminate his points.
