(An Accordion Mass) by Ray Ashley
(c) 2007
This is a setting of the Latin Rite Mass, for accordion and voices in two parts, soprano and baritone. The instrumental part is intended to be played by a classical accordion (piano keyboard or chromatic) with free bass on the left hand. If this is not available, a second accordion, perhaps a bass accordion, could play the left hand parts. The music would also work perfectly well on any organ or piano, but it is optimally intended to be played on accordion. The tuning of the accordion should be dry, the choice of specific registers are left to the player. The vocals may be sung by either soprano and baritone soloists, or a small choir in two parts, or even a congregation split into two groups, low and high voices. The baritone part is within the range of most tenors and basses, from the B an ocatve below middle C to the E above middle C. The soprano part goes from middle C to the B above the treble clef. The sanctus is for accordion and soprano alone, the Benedictus for accordion and baritone alone. Optimally, this work
would be performed by a classical accordion and a small vocal ensemble.
